When I Was Sixteen

When I was sixteen
I was in high school.
Tenth and eleventh grade.
Graduation.
Baptism.
Locks.
I wasn’t thinking
Seriously
About a career,
Or my life.
Just finishing my exams
And moving on
To whatever came next.
The unemployment line
Is what my teacher said.
We laughed.
She was right.
